Applications of 1 2-propanediol

1,2-propanediol, also known as Propylene glycol or Mono Propylene Glycol, is a colorless, tasteless, sweet-tasting organic compound, which is an important chemical material, mainly divided into Propylene Glycol Industrial Grade, Propylene Glycol Pharmaceutical Grade and Propylene Glycol Food Grade.

It is used in a wide range of applications, covering many fields.

1. Propylene glycol is used as raw material for resin, plasticizer, surfactant, emulsifier and emulsion breaker, propylene glycol is also used as antifreeze and heat carrier.

2. Propylene glycol is an important raw material for unsaturated polyester, epoxy resin, polyurethane resin, the amount of this area accounts for about 45% of the total consumption of propylene glycol, this unsaturated polyester is used in large quantities for surface coatings and reinforced plastics.

3. Propylene glycol is used as carrier solvent; wetting agent; humectant; anti-caking agent; antioxidant; tissue improver; surfactant; stabilizer; thickener; dough conditioner; emulsifier; flavoring agent; excipient; processing aid.

Propylene glycol is mainly used as solvent for various spices, pigments, preservatives, extraction solvent for vanilla beans, roasted coffee grains, natural spices, etc. It is used as a moisturizing and softening agent for candy, bread, packaged meat, cheese, etc. It can also be used as an anti-mold additive for noodles and stuffing cores. Add 0.006% in soy milk, it can make the flavor unchanged when heated, and make white and shiny packaged tofu, and the volume of oil frying is expanded.

4. Propylene glycol is the intermediate of fungicide phenotropic metconazole.

5. Propylene glycol is used as a solvent to dissolve preservatives, pigments, antioxidants and other insoluble food additives in it, and then added to food; it has strong hygroscopicity and has moisturizing and anti-freezing effect on food.

6. Propylene glycol is used as gas chromatography fixative, solvent, antifreeze agent, plasticizer and dehydrating agent.

7. Used as drug carrier, granular drug agent. It can be used as moisturizer, softener and solvent in cosmetics. In tobacco industry, it can be used as tobacco flavor, tobacco moisturizer, preservative, etc.

8. Propylene glycol can be used to make automobile coolant, which can prevent coolant from freezing at low temperature, and also has the effect of anti-corrosion and anti-rust.

9. Propylene glycol can be used as one of the main ingredients of e-cigarette, which is used to make vape oil of e-cigarette.
